A multimedia production of the world’s most famous tragedy. Hamlet’s drama unfolds on a number of planes. On the plane of Shakespeare’s story, the modern characters wrestle with perennial themes. On the level of theatre, the actors play a game with the help of the characters they portray. The results of the game are unpredictable both for them and for us. This Hamlet should surprise. It is a classic with an ultra-modern form.

Reviews

Monika Pęcikiewicz’s original Hamlet brings out from the shadows Ophelia and women implicated in the brutal affairs of men, theatre and politics. [...] The production is visually striking. Pęcikiewicz fills the perspective of the stage with scenes from police monitoring footage and flashing lights of shopping malls. Medieval and Renaissance paintings – depictions of an animal menagerie and hunting scenes – speak volumes about people.

Jacek Cieślak, "Rzeczpospolita"

Monika Pęcikiewicz’s Hamlet goes well beyond the well-charted territory of a school set text. In fact, all the characters and situations are reversed, stripped of their obvious meanings.

Paweł Sztarbowski, "Newsweek Polska"

The best thing about this Hamlet is [...] Karolina Benoit’s atmospheric, modern set, recalling the work of the famous Robert Wilson. It is simple and spare, but in combination with changing light and disturbing music it brings to mind David Lynch’s dark dreams.

Mariola Szczyrba, www.kulturaonline.pl

Monika Pęcikiewicz’s production at Polski Theatre in Wrocław is noteworthy because of the director’s relentless [...] exploration of the underside of acclaimed works of literature to ask questions about hidden women’s voices.

Monika Żółkoś, International Shakespeare Festival

Monika Pęcikiewicz, confronting her actors with Shakespeare characters, shows the immaturity of our times. Today’s Hamlet does not fit the standards of the past or the whole collection of interpretative templates created by Hamlet scholars. He is a confused kid living in a plastic world full of unreal images.
